Giants negotiating new deal with Ryan Vogelsong

San Francisco does not plan to pick up Vogelsong’s option, but is interested in bringing the pitcher back on a new deal.

The San Francisco Giants have begun discussions with Ryan Vogelsong about restructuring his contract, reports Andrew Baggarly of CSN Bay Area. The Giants are expected to announce an official decision regarding Vogelsong on Monday.

San Francisco holds a $6.5 million club option for Vogelsong next season, but has told the starter it does not plan to exercise the option. Instead, the two sides are working on a deal that has a smaller guaranteed salary with incentives based on innings pitched and/or starts, according to Baggarly.

Vogelsong made 59 starts for the Giants in 2011 and 2012, making the All-Star team in '11 and helping San Francisco win the World Series in '12. The right-hander, however, struggled in 2013, going 4-6 with a 5.73 ERA while spending time on the disabled list after breaking his hand.

The Giants have two openings in the starting rotation, behind Matt Cain, Tim Lincecum and Madison Bumgarner. The team is also not expected to sign a free agent who has been tendered a qualifying offer; San Francisco does not want to part with the 14th overall pick in the 2014 Amateur Draft.
