Omar Infante an option for Yankees if Robinson Cano signs elsewhere

The Yankees still remain the favorite to sign Cano, but are working on a fall-back option.

Jamie Squire

New York Yankees general manager Brian Cashman has talked with free-agent second baseman Omar Infante, making Infante a fall-back option if the club fails to re-sign Cano, reports George A. King III and Kevin Davidoff of the New York Post.

The Yankees remain the favorite to sign Cano, according to King and Davidoff. Cano is considered the top free-agent second baseman, coming off a season where he hit .314/.383/.516 with 27 homers and 107 RBI. He will also be the most expensive free agent second baseman, and the Yankees are attempting to keep their payroll under $189 million.

Infante is coming off a solid 2013 campaign, batting .318/.345/.450 over 476 plate appearances. He is also expected to sign for significantly less money; Infante made $4 million last season, and the Tigers will not offer him a qualifying offer.

New York will need to sign a second baseman, as they lack an obvious in-house replacement for Cano.
