The Colorado Rockies are interested in signing free agent catcher Carlos Ruiz, reports Troy Renck of the Denver Post.
Rockies interested in Carlos Ruiz
Ruiz could give the Rockies a defensive upgrade at catcher while freeing more at-bats for Wilin Rosario at first base or right field.

Ruiz started 83 games for the Phillies in 2013, batting .268/.320/.368 over 341 plate appearances. He has shown more ability to contribute offensively in the past; Ruiz hit .325/.394/.540 in 2012, and is a career .274/.358/.412 hitter.
The veteran missed time last season, serving a 25-game suspension for Adderall and spending nearly a month on the disabled with a strained right hamstring.
Wilin Rosario served as the Rockies primary catcher in 2013, batting .292/.315/.486 while starting 103 games behind the plate. Ruiz is considered a better defender than Rosario, and his addition could potentially free up more at-bats for Rosario at first base or right field.
Philadelphia remains interested in re-signing Ruiz, according to Renck. Ruiz made $5 million in 2013, and is eligible for free agency for the first time in his career.
