The Minnesota Twins have inquired about free agent starting pitcher Johan Santana, asking his agents to look at Santana's medical information, reports LaVelle E Neal III of the Minnesota Star-Tribune.

Santana became a free agent when the Mets bought out his $25.5 million option for 2014. New York remains interested in possibly bringing Santana back on a smaller contract, and Santana's agents have been contacted by "several teams," according to Neal.

The southpaw has missed two of the past three seasons thanks to a pair of shoulder surgeries. He struggled when healthy during the 2012 season, going 6-9 with a 4.85 ERA over 21 starts.
Ed Greenberg, one of Santana’s agents, discussed the starter’s current rehab with Neal, stating:
“Johan is progressing well. He’s into his throwing program and is feeling good. It’s still a work in progress, but is progressing as planned.”
Santana could be an interesting gamble for a team willing to take on the reclamation project. He won two Cy Young awards in Minnesota, compiling a 93-44 record with a 3.22 ERA over eight seasons for the Twins.
Twins’ starters had an AL-worst 5.26 ERA last season. The staff only struck out 477 batters, 221 less strikeouts than the second-worst AL team.
