MLB news roundup: Manny Machado, Andrelton Simmons named Platinum Glove Award winners

Manny Machado and Andrelton Simmons on Friday were recognized as the best of the 18 Gold Glove winners in 2013.

USA TODAY Sports

Baltimore Orioles third baseman Manny Machado and Atlanta Braves shortstop Andrelton Simmons were named the 2013 Rawlings Platinum Glove Award winners on Friday.

Machado and Simmons are the first players not named Yadier Molina or Adrian Beltre to win the award, which debuted at the end of the 2011 season. Machado, who was the American League's Gold Glove winner at the hot corner, was 32 runs above average in the field, according to Baseball-Reference, and accumulated 4.3 WAR on defense alone.

Simmons, a National League Gold Glove winner, displayed similar wizardry at shortstop, finishing the year 30 runs above average and racking up 5.4 WAR with his glove.
