Diamondbacks plan to add pitcher before winter meetings are over

Kevin Towers is a busy man.

USA TODAY Sports

The Arizona Diamondbacks are among the busiest teams at the Winter Meetings. The team acquired Mark Trumbo in a three-team deal on Tuesday and is also aggressively pursuing a starting pitcher, general manager Kevin Towers told Nick Piecoro of The Arizona Republic.

Towers' intention for the winter meetings was to fill the need for a power bat and a starting pitcher, noting that one would be acquired in a trade and the other via free agency, per Piecoro. A trade brought Trumbo's bat to the desert, leading to the D-Backs' interest in free-agent starter Matt Garza, according to MLB.com's Steve Gilbert. If Arizona decides to go the free-agent route, its payroll could increase to $112 million, Towers told Gilbert, which would be a $26 million increase over its 2013 total.

The D-Backs may still explore another trade to land a starter, notes Piecoro, with one of their young shortstops representing the possible bargaining chip. Arizona is eyeing Indians starter Justin Masterson as a trade target, per ESPN's Buster Olney.

D-Backs starters finished 10th in the National League with a 4.13 combined ERA in 2013.
