The Royals have agreed to a four-year deal with free agent second baseman Omar Infante, according to Buster Olney of ESPN and confirmed by Jon Heyman of CBS Sports. The contract is worth $30.25 million and contains incentives as well, per Heyman.

The 31-year-old will be familiar to Royals fans after spending eight years with the Tigers in two separate stints with Detroit. Infante was originally signed by the Tigers as an amateur out of Venezuela in 1999, and he spent the first six years of his major league career there. After trips to Atlanta and Florida, Infante return to Detroit as a free agent in 2012. The veteran second baseman had a career year at the plate with the Tigers last season, hitting .318/.345/.450 in 476 plate appearances.
Second base has been an issue for the Royals for some time. Kansas City tried five different players at the position last season, including 39-year-old veteran Miguel Tejada and journeyman Emilio Bonifacio. Their second baseman combined to hit .240/.296/.306, the worst batting line at the position in the American League. Infante, a career .279/.319/.402 hitter, should be a substantial if this deal gets done.
