Mike Pelfrey signs 2-year deal with Twins, per reports

The right-hander pitched for Minnesota in 2013 and will return to the team for $5.5 million per year.

Brace Hemmelgarn-USA TODAY Sport

Free agent starting pitcher Mike Pelfrey is returning to the Minnesota Twins on a two-year deal worth $11 million, according to Jon Heyman of CBS Sports. The contract also includes $3.5 million in performance bonuses, reports Heyman. The deal was later confirmed by Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports.

Pelfrey made 29 starts for the Twins in 2013, but he did not pitch particularly well. The right-hander went 5-13 with a 5.19 ERA while averaging just 5.26 innings per start, so he was ineffective at both preventing runs and eating innings. His career numbers suggest that he is better than he showed last season, though; he has a 4.48 ERA in 182 games (178 starts) over eight campaigns and has twice exceeded 200 innings in a season.

The Twins have been very aggressive in building their rotation this winter. After receiving an MLB-worst 5.26 ERA from their starters in 2013, Minnesota spent big on veterans Ricky Nolasco (4yr/$49M) and Phil Hughes (3yr/$24M) to complement incumbent options Kevin Correia, Sam Deduno, Scott Diamond and Andrew Albers.
