Jesse Crain free agency: RP mulling ‘multiple offers’

Multiple teams have interest in the former White Sox reliever.

Kim Klement-USA TODAY Sports

Right hander Jesse Crain is fielding offers from several teams as he attempts to return from a shoulder injury that kept him from pitching in the second half of 2013. According to Fox Sports' Jon Morosi, Crain is currently deciding between one- and two-year deals.

After a fantastic start to the 2013 season, Crain was placed on the 60-day disabled list with a right shoulder strain, but that didn't stop the Wild Card-charging Rays from acquiring him. He never took the mound for Tampa Bay, but the White Sox still received minor leaguers Sean Bierman and Ben Kline in October to complete the deal. The Rays knew his injury made him a high-risk acquisition, but his 0.74 ERA through June was too much for them to pass on.

The first half of 2013 wasn't a colossal anomaly for Crain. From 2010 to 2012, he put up a 2.73 ERA in 189 appearances for the Twins and White Sox, and while he only saved 2 games over that san, he was still one of the top-40 relievers in the game with a 2.5 fWAR.

Teams considering the 10-year veteran are likely to see him as an seventh- or eighth-inning guy, but that doesn’t mean he can’t bring substantial value to the club he ends up with.
