Ryan Madson free agency: Rehabbing RP holding private workouts with teams

Madson has missed two full seasons due to Tommy John surgery, but is hoping to show interested clubs that he is nearing a healthy return.

USA TODAY Sports

Free agent relief pitcher Ryan Madson has been conducting private workouts with teams in an effort to prove that he is progressing well in his long return from Tommy John surgery, reports Jon Heyman of CBS Sports.

Madson underwent the procedure after tearing an elbow ligament back in spring training of 2012, causing him to miss the entire year. The following offseason, as he was still recuperating, he signed a one-year deal with the Angels. However, numerous setbacks in his rehab from the surgery caused him to miss another full season. The Angels released him on Aug. 5 after he spent the entire year on the DL.

The last season Madson pitched, back in 2011, he earned the closers role for the Phillies, with whom he had spent his entire career up to that point. He finished with 32 saves while posting a 2.37 ERA and 1.15 WHIP. Since breaking into the majors in 2003, Madson has a career 3.59 ERA, but had a 2.89 ERA in the five years following a dreadful 2006 season that saw him start 17 games.

Madson changed agencies for his upcoming free agency, leaving Scott Boras and signing with Damon Lapa and Scott Leventhal of All Bases Covered Management. Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports reports that many teams have been looking into Madson, including the Boston Red Sox.

Two years ago, Madson had been close to a four year deal worth $44 million with the Phillies before negotiations fell apart and the team signed Jonathan Papelbon instead. Now, Madson may struggle to find a guaranteed major league deal. However, any team that signs him may wind up having a steal in a cheap, but highly talented, arm.
