The Houston Astros and All-Star catcher Jason Castro have yet to discuss a contract extension, according to Chris Cotillo at MLB Daily Dish. Cotillo says that they will likely "feel each other out" over the next few months to see if there is any common ground.

The Houston Astros have yet to reach out to their All-Star catcher to talk contract extension, but they likely will soon.

The 26-year-old catcher was the Astros’ best player in 2013, as he enjoyed a breakout season punctuated by an All-Star selection. The backstop hit an impressive .276/.350/.485 with 54 extra-base hits. He is arbitration-eligible for the first time this offseason and is in line for a healthy raise, so the Astros may want to try to lock him up long-term.
Castro is one of the cornerstones of the Astros' rebuilding process, as the 10th overall pick in the 2008 draft has spent his entire professional career in the Astros' system. Jose Altuve, another homegrown cornerstone, signed a four-year extension with the Astros in July of 2013. That could be seen as a precedent for discussions with Castro. The Astros have lost over 100 games for three straight seasons and have very little in terms of financial obligations going forward, so it would make sense for them to try to retain over the long haul one of their few productive players. A full rebuild has to start somewhere.
