The Texas Rangers have received utilityman Alex Castellanos from the Boston Red Sox after claiming him on waivers, according to Rangers Executive VP of Communications John Blake. He has been added to Texas' 40-man roster.

Castellanos is primarily an outfielder, but he also has a fair amount of experience playing second and third base in the minor leagues. He appeared in 24 games for the Dodgers over the last two seasons and batted .171/.186/.390 with two home runs in 43 plate appearances, and was traded to Boston in October. He has a career 864 OPS in six minor league seasons.

The 27-year-old will provide depth at several positions for Texas. Although the Rangers recently added Shin-Soo Choo to their outfield, they also lost David Murphy and Nelson Cruz to free agency; after their starting three of Choo, Leonys Martin, and Alex Rios, they have a group of spare parts highlighted by prospect Michael Choice. The addition of Castellanos gives them one more backup option in the outfield.
In addition, Castellanos also adds one more body to a thin infield. Now that Ian Kinsler has been dealt, Jurickson Profar and Elvis Andrus have only Adam Rosales as a viable option off the bench.
On the flip side, the Red Sox lose some much-needed depth in the outfield with the loss of Castellanos. They non-tendeded Ryan Kalish and plan to promote Jackie Bradley Jr to replace the departed Jacoby Ellsbury, so they will need to find someone else to stash in Triple-A in case Bradley and/or Shane Victorino go down with injuries and need to be replaced in center field.
