MLB Roundup: Yuniesky Betancourt could start; Pirates and Rangers swap depth pieces

Because apparently some teams never learn, Yuniesky Betancourt is drawing interest, and there is at least one club that is looking at him as a potential starter, according to Zack Links of MLB Trade Rumors. Betancourt has been the worst everyday player in the game over the last three year by Fangraph's version of WAR, thanks to a .234/.257/.376 batting line and defense that has cost his clubs around five runs a season. He did play poorly at all four infield positions as a member of the Brewers last season, however, so while he isn't good, he is at least versatile.

The Rangers acquired righty Miles Mikolas from the Pirates in exchange for first baseman Chris McGuiness. To make room on the 40-man roster for Mikolas, Texas designated outfielder Rafael Ortega for assignment. For the Rangers, this deal adds a hard-throwing arm to give them bullpen depth in the minors next season. The Pirates add depth in the minors at a weak point as well, picking up a left-handed hitting first baseman who has had some success in Triple-A thanks to a patient approach.

The Blue Jays are looking to add a starting pitcher, but they won't say anything about their interest in Japanese ace Masahiro Tanaka, reports Brendan Kennedy of the Toronto Star. GM Alex Anthopoulos could also pursue a starter in trade at this point, saying the choice between trading and signing is "50-50" at this point. Thank goodness that has been cleared up.

The Nationals have re-signed second baseman Will Rhymes to a minor league deal.
