Yankees agree to sign Kelly Johnson, per report

The Yankees exercised their Robinson Cano contingency plan on Wednesday.

USA TODAY Sports

The New York Yankees and free-agent infielder Kelly Johnson agreed to a one-year contract on Wednesday, according to CBS Sports' Jon Heyman. The deal is reportedly worth around $3 million.

Johnson, 31, hit .235/.305/.410 with 16 home runs in 407 plate appearances for the Tampa Bay Rays in 2013. He is expected to play a utility role for the Yankees, but is also an insurance policy for the team in case they aren't able to re-sign Robinson Cano, according to the New York Post's Joel Sherman, who first reported on Tuesday that the two parties were close to a deal.

Johnson is a career .253/.335/.427 hitter. His best big-league season came with the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2010, when he hit .284/.370/.496 with 26 homers.
