The Miami Marlins have reached a deal with free agent infielder Rafael Furcal to fill the team's hole at second base, according to Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports. The one-year deal will be worth $3.5 million and includes playing time incentives, reports Juan C. Rodriguez of the Sun Sentinel.

Furcal has not played an inning at second since 2004, when he appeared there for two frames as a member of the Braves. Once considered an elite defensive shortstop, the 36-year-old experienced some decline in range as a member of the Cardinals in 2011-12 before hurting his once-powerful arm. In the wake of that injury, a move to second might be necessary to continue his career.
For the Marlins, Furcal should be a substantial upgrade at his new position. Primary starter Donovan Solano and backups Derek Dietrich and Chris Valaika combined to hit just .234/.291/.348 last season, giving the Marlins some of weakest production from the position in the game.
