David Price trade rumors: Rays, Dodgers may be ‘matching up’

The Dodgers could be inching closer to acquiring the Rays’ ace.

Jim Rogash

The Rays and Dodgers could be inching closer to "matching up" on a deal that would send former Cy Young winner David Price to Hollywood, according to Bruce Levine. The Dodgers, along with the Mariners and Rangers, the most serious suitors for Price at this point, according to Jon Heyman.

The Rays have made it a habit in recent years of trading off their ace-caliber pitchers as they get more expensive and closer to free agency. Price has two years of arbitration eligibility remaining before he reaches free agency and will earn a nice raise over the $10.1 million he made last season. Both Matt Garza and James Shields were traded for impressive prospect hauls at similar points in their careers.

There has been an air of inevitability surrounding Price since the end of the season. The No. 1 overall pick in 2007 and AL Cy Young winner in 2011 appears destined to continue his career somewhere other than Tampa. Price has been durable and good over his career so far, as he has posted an ERA of 3.33 in just under 1,000 innings. If (and likely when) he is traded, the Rays will command a handsome return.

The Dodgers seem hellbent on winning the World Series like right now, and adding Price would certainly help. He would look really nice in their rotation next to Clayton Kershaw and Zack Greinke, both of whom have also won Cy Young awards.
