The talks surrounding Angels outfielder Mark Trumbo, the Diamondbacks and other unnamed clubs are continuing with Los Angeles focusing on pitcher Trevor Cahill and Tyler Skaggs, according to Tim Brown of Yahoo Sports and confirmed by Jerry Crasnick of ESPN.

The talks around outfielder Mark Trumbo are progressing as the Angels focus on pitching.

The Diamondbacks were “pushing” the Angels to make a deal, as first reported by Fox Sports’ Ken Rosenthal, but it remains to be seen if they are willing to depart with a premium prospect like Skaggs to get the deal done. The 22-year-old lefty ranked 12th on Baseball America’s list of top prospects before the start of the 2013 season. He saw 58 innings in the majors between 2012 and 2013 and posted a 5.43 ERA with a 3-6 record in 13 starts. Despite a high ERA, the young southpaw flashed some potential last year, striking out 8.4 hitters per nine innings over 38 2/3 innings.
The right-handed Cahill pitched 146 2/3 innings for Arizona in 2013, going 8-10 with a 3.99 ERA. He has a 3.89 ERA in 153 career starts.
Both pitchers offer the Angels a great deal of team control in exchange for Trumbo. Skaggs is still not arbitration-eligible and he will not reach free agency until 2020. Cahill comes with a much higher price tag, but he is also secured long-term. The 25-year-old is signed to a four-year, $30 million deal through 2015 with team options for 2016 and 2017 $13 million and $13.5 million, respectively.
The Diamondbacks are not the only team target Trumbo and there is no word yet on their willingness to part with either pitcher. The Angels interest in these players at least signals that the talks between the two clubs are ongoing and Arizona has the chips to make it happen if they value Trumbo highly enough.
