But Wednesday the Dodgers will have to scramble to avoid getting swept at home by the supposedly punchless Pads, who have rung up 15 runs in taking the first two games of a three-game series at Chavez Ravine.
Monday night San Diego, playing without both Chase Headley and Carlos Quentin, got a three-run homer from starting pitcher Eric Stults on its way to a 6-3 victory, cashing in as +145 underdogs on MLB betting odds.
Tuesday the Padres banged out 15 hits, three each by Chris Denorfia, Yonder Alonso and Alexi Amarista, on their way to a 9-2 victory, ringing the register as +160 dogs.
Coming into this series San Diego had lost five games in a row, and had been held to three runs or fewer in eight of its first 12 games.
The first two games of this series have both played OVER on the totals. And going back to last year the OVER/UNDERS are 12-5-3 in the last 20 LA/San Diego games.
For Wednesday’s series finale the Dodgers with Clayton Kershaw slated to start were early -250 favorites over the Padres with expected starter Tyson Ross.
Elsewhere Wednesday, the Cardinals with Shelby Miller were early -125 favorites for their series rubber match against AJ Burnett and the Pirates in Pittsburgh; the Blue Jays with JA Happ were -135 favorites for their rubber match against Jose Quintana and the White Sox in Toronto; the Braves with Mike Minor were -190 chalk for their attempt to extend their winning streak to 11 games against the Royals with Wade Davis; and the Yankees with CC Sabathia were early -155 chalk for the second game of a three-game set at the Stadium against the Diamondbacks with Wade Miley.
Looking ahead to Thursday, the NL East-leading Braves begin a four-game weekend series in Pittsburgh; and the Cardinals begin a four-game series in Philadelphia.
