Well, I guess umpires aren’t ruining the current Major League Baseball promotion on Twitter, in the sense they’ve become involved and started giving out prizes to the wrong people due to poor judgment. Really, their incompetence this week, something that’s been on far too much display, is making @MLB’s attempts at giving away fabulous gifts to devoted followers far more bearable on this Friday afternoon. It doesn’t make the Athletics feel any better about the botched replay call, or the Angels any better about failure to even know the basic rules of the game, but hey, it’s something amid a sea of aggravation this year.
Umpires ruining promotional MLB contests, too
On the field, off the field, the recent incompetence of umpires is found everywhere.

Maybe next time MLB should save this fill-in-the-blank Twitter promotion for when their fan base isn’t outraged at the officials. Observe!
Umpire Accountability? RT @mlb To enter to win the prize pack, fill in the blank: "There’s no ____ in baseball!"
— Tyler Trout (@TylerTrout) May 10, 2013
There are a whole bunch with these same words, but this one, as far as I can tell via Twitter search, came first. If not, sorry, whoever made this joke first: there are thousands of replies to sift through and Twitter search is annoying.
Bad umpires RT @mlb To enter to win, fill in the blank: "Heroes get remembered but ____ never die" - Sandlot. Remember to use #mlBBtakeover!

Well, okay, I guess by virtue of the fact Angel Hernandez is still alive, we can say there’s a non-zero chance he’s immortal. But we shouldn’t joke about the lifespan of umpires, you guys. Let’s move on to something less heavy.
Good umpires. RT @mlb: To enter to win the prize pack, fill in the blank: "There’s no ____ in baseball!" – Use #mlBBtakeover in answer!
— Samuel Lam(@SamuelYLam) May 10, 2013
Not grammatically sound, but that’s Tom Hanks’ fault, not our good tweeter Samuel’s.
umpires RT @mlb: To enter to win, fill in the blank: "Let me root, root, root for the ___ team." #mlBBtakeover @blackberry
— Roy Rogers McFreely (@moose_bigelow) May 10, 2013
Because people come to the game to see the umpires, right, MLB?
"It ain’t over till the umpires throw the game!' – Yogi Berra #mlBBtakeover @blackberry @mlb
— MLBUmps (@MLBUmps) May 10, 2013
There’s a good chance Yogi didn’t actually say everything this tweet says he did, but I’ll allow it.
Of course, @MLB’s replies feed must be so overwhelmed that they are barely noticing these cracks at their umps’ expense, but whatever. Now they’re preserved for posterity’s sake, or at least for the next time we’re annoyed at Angel Hernandez.
