St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Adam Wainwright lost his bid for a no-hitter in the eighth inning Saturday as Colorado Rockies third baseman Nolan Arenado connected for a single with one out. Arenado was just the second baserunner allowed by the veteran ace.

It was the first hit for the Rockies in 49 plate appearances when including the dominant performance of Shelby Miller on Friday. The rookie retired 27 straight hitters after allowing a leadoff single, with Wainwright continuing the effort Saturday afternoon. Wainwright was just five outs away from the first St. Louis no-hitter in nearly 12 years.
Wainwright still finished the eighth inning scoreless, leaving him with a possible one-hitter like Miller. Through eight frames, he’s recorded seven strikeouts with one walk. He would have been the first Cardinals pitcher to record a no-hitter since Bud Smith in 2001.
