Jesus Montero triples with help from baseball comedy

Triples are either wonderful displays of athleticism or hit by catchers like Jesus Montero.

USA TODAY Sports

Triples are often a showcase of athletic skill -- power, speed, you know, the good stuff. Sometimes, though, triples happen because almost no one involved does their job. Take Jesus Montero's triple against the Orioles on Wednesday night:

Montero hits it a long way, and at pitcher-friendly Safeco, so we've got the power part down. But it was nearly an out before it brained Adam Jones on its way down, and then sat on the warning track waiting for someone else to come get it.

Then you’ve got Montero, a catcher listed at 6-foot-3 and 230 pounds, huffing it around the bases as fast as his backstop legs will take him. You can see the moment he’s aware Jones fell, as he realizes slowing down isn’t an option, and then his overzealous slide nearly takes him past third base until he grabs it with his hands like Ellen Ripley trying to avoid getting shot out of an open airlock.

The look on his face after might be my favorite part, though, as it’s somewhere in between “omg I hit a triple” and “air I need air where is the air.”

Adam Jones is okay, if you were wondering.
