Brett Lawrie out, Clay Buchholz could return Thursday, and other injury notes

The latest in injury news from around Major League Baseball.

A few players had some serious injury scares on Monday, and a key starter for a contending club is hoping to make a return later this week. Here’s the latest in bumps and bruises around the baseball diamond:

Lawrie sprains ankle, out of lineup Tuesday

Toronto Blue Jays third baseman Brett Lawrie sprained his left ankle Monday night on an incredibly awkward slide into second base. Sliding under the tag from Braves shortstop Andrelton Simmons on a successful steal, Lawrie's left foot stuck on the bag as the rest of his body decided to continue following the laws of inertia.

He tried to stay in the game but was pulled shortly thereafter when he very obviously hobbled into third base. X-rays taken after the game were negative, so Lawrie is listed as day-to-day. Mark DeRosa will start in his place on Tuesday, reports Ben Nicholson-Smith of Sporstnet.ca, but Lawrie could possibly be available to pinch-hit.

Buchholz might return Thursday

Red Sox starter Clay Buchholz was passed over on Monday because of discomfort in his collarbone, but he could return to the rotation as early as Thursday if things continue to go well, reports Annie Maroon of WEEI.

Buchholz allegedly irritated the AC joint on the top of his throwing shoulder while sleeping over the weekend and decided he wasn't feeling good enough to make his regular start. Alfredo Aceves took the mound in his place on Monday, tossing six innings of one-run ball.

X-rays negative on Revere’s elbow

Worst. Funny bone hit. Ever. Phillies outfielder Ben Revere crashed into the center field wall at Fenway Park on Monday to rob David Ortiz of extra bases, appearing to jam his left elbow into the wall in the process.

Philly fans feared the worst as Revere writhed on the ground in pain for the next few minutes, but he managed to remain in the game and X-rays afterwards came out negative, per Todd Zolecki of MLB.com.

The jury is still out on whether Revere will be in the lineup on Tuesday.

Parra leaves with calf cramp

Diamondbacks outfielder Gerardo Parra left Monday's nightcap against the Rangers with a cramp in his left calf, per MLB.com's Steve Gilbert. Parra was subbed out for Cody Ross immediately after striking out against Yu Darvish in the fifth inning.

Not much is known about the injury beyond the diagnosis, but if it truly is just a cramp, then Parra shouldn’t be sidelined for more than a couple days.
