Red Sox recall Jackie Bradley Jr. from Triple-A

Boston’s young outfielder is back with the big-league club for the two-game series against the Phillies.

The Boston Red Sox are recalling young outfielder Jackie Bradley Jr. from Triple-A on Wednesday, reports Maureen Mullen of CSN Northeast. Right-hander Alex Wilson will be optioned back down to the minors to make room on the roster.

Bradley, 23, made headlines this spring when he made the Red Sox’ Opening Day roster as their starting left fielder. The first few games went well for Bradley, but he quickly fell into a prolonged slump and was demoted in mid-April.

Bradley hit the disabled list with biceps tendinitis shortly after his demotion to Triple-A, but turned things around in a big way when he returned to the lineup a little over a week ago. Baseball America's No. 31 prospect is batting .354/.457/.544 in 20 games at Pawtuckett, and is currently in the midst of a 12-game hitting streak.

Manager John Farrell told Mullen that Bradley would return as an "extra outfielder" when recalled, but it's unclear how that'll play out with Shane Victorino on the DL. Bradley could platoon with Jonny Gomes against right-handed pitching, and may potentially push Daniel Nava into left at Fenway so he (Bradley) can have more room to roam in the outfield. No matter what happens, Mike Carp will be playing less.
