Over under betting: Oakland leads MLB with OVERs

Oakland can hit and they can’t pitch. If that sounds like a recipe for lots of OVER bets, you are correct. The Athletics lead the Majors and bettors are taking notice.

It’s no big surprise to see the Detroit Tigers playing a lot of OVERS so far this season, with that lineup full of boppers they’ve got.

And the LA Angels, with their share of big sticks and surprisingly poor pitching, have also been punching the OVER button with regularity.

But in a somewhat shocking development, no team in baseball has played OVER on the totals more often this season than the team that plays half its games in that stadium notorious for easy foul-ball outs, the Oakland A’s. They have also climbed to No. 7 in the OddsShark.com MLB power rankings.

So far this Spring Oakland leads all of baseball in scoring at over five and a half runs per game. On the other side of the equation, however, A’s pitchers, after ranking sixth in the Majors last year with a 3.48 team ERA, now rank 25th with a 4.33 ERA.

Consequently, Oakland has leaned toward the OVERS this season by a lopsided 24-5 margin.

Other teams playing a lot of OVERS so far this season include the Brewers at 19-8, the Angels at 19-9, Houston at 18-9, the Mets at 17-8 and Detroit at 17-9.

This weekend the A’s hit the Bronx for three games with the Yankees. As of Friday morning sportsbooks were listing an OVER/UNDER on runs for the series at 27.5.

Also, the Mets are in Atlanta for three games with the Braves. Shops are offering an O/U on runs for that series at 21.5.

Meanwhile, Milwaukee continues a four-game series at home against St. Louis; the Angels continue a four-game series at home against Baltimore; and the Astros and Tigers continue a four-game series in Houston.

Thursday night’s Brewers-Cardinals game played OVER its total, as did the Houston/Detroit game.

Elsewhere around MLB this weekend the Reds are at Wrigley for three games with the Cubs; the Nationals and Pirates play three games in Pittsburgh; the Red Sox and Rangers hook up for three games in Arlington; and the Dodgers and Giants get together for three games out by McCovey Cove.

As of Friday AM, sportsbooks were listing Cincy as a -165 favorite to win that series in Chicago; Washington was favored by -130 to win that series against the Pirates; Texas was -175 chalk over Boston; and San Francisco was favored by -120 for its series with LA.
