The Rays will promote pitching prospect Chris Archer from Triple-A Durham, according to reports.

He'll make a start for the Rays on Saturday, after which he will likely return to Durham. Alex Cobb has been dealing with a cut on his finger, and the team wants to give the injury time to heal.

The Rays were also considering calling up left-handed pitcher Alex Torres from Triple-A, but ultimately went with Archer. Archer has had success for the Rays in the past, starting four games in 2012 and pitching 29 1/3 innings. He had an ERA of 4.60, and coupled that with a 36/13 K/BB ratio.
He'll be the Rays' eighth starting pitcher of the season, which is unusually high for them. Alex Colome and Jake Odorizzi are other prospects who were given the call to start games.
Archer has an ERA of 3.96 in 50 innings for the Bulls this season, with a 52/23 K/BB ratio. He has been working on his command, and needs to continue to improve if he wants to solidify a spot in the Rays’ rotation.
Acquired in the Matt Garza trade with the Cubs, Archer has become one of the better prospects in the Rays organization. He has a chance to be as good of a pitcher as Garza, but he needs to keep the ball in the park and stop walking so many batters. He, along with Hak-Ju Lee, show that the Rays are well on track to winning that trade.
