Jesus Montero injury: Mariners catcher tears meniscus in left knee

Jesus Montero’s season went from bad to worse after suffering a meniscus tear. He will be out 4-6 weeks.

Seattle Mariners catcher/designated hitter Jesus Montero had another unfortunate development in his 2013 season, as he has suffered a torn meniscus in his left knee and will be out 4-6 weeks, according to Ryan Divish of the Tacoma News Tribune.

It’s unknown when the injury occurred or how it happened, but Larry Stone of the Seattle Times said Montero was examined by a doctor on Friday, and Shannon Drayer of 710 ESPN noted he had ice on his knee after games for the last few weeks.

Montero was recently sent down to the Tacoma Rainiers after major struggles both at the plate and behind it. He hasn’t developed into the player the Mariners thought they were getting when they traded for him, hitting just .208/.264/.327 and becoming one of the worst defensive catchers in the league. The team demoted him to Triple-A to let him DH and focus on his hitting while learning first base. This injury obviously does not help matters, and a bad season just continues to get worse for the once-promising player.
