Derek Jeter injury: Yankees star begins hitting, fielding drills

Derek Jeter has taken a small step in his rehab.

New York Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter took groundballs, swung the bat and played long toss on Monday as part of the rehabilitation process from his ankle injury, according to Andrew Marchand of ESPN New York.

Jeter will have to continue doing these activities before getting further clearance to further his rehab drills because thus far the groundballs are being hit directly at him and the swings are only dry swings as Jeter tries to regain all the motions necessary to start back in the Bronx.

This is the first anyone has reported about Jeter participating in baseball activities since he re-injured his ankle.

The Yankees are struggling to replace Jeter at shortstop and, as the team continues to try and contend in the American League East, New York definitely needs more production from the position so getting Jeter back would be a huge boost both on and off the field. With the buzz surrounding third baseman Alex Rodriguez off the field, Monday's news comes as a good kind of publicity.

The injured Curtis Granderson -- another one of the key cogs that the Yankees' lineup -- was also throwing, but he didn't do anything beyond that.
