Angels to skip Joe Blanton’s turn in rotation

The struggling right-hander will be passed over this weekend when the Halos visit the Bronx.

The Los Angeles Angels have decided to skip struggling right-hander Joe Blanton's spot in the rotation for their weekend series against the New York Yankees in the Bronx, reports Mike DiGiovanna of the LA Times.

Signed to a two-year, $15 million deal over the winter, Blanton has been terrible for the Angels in his first two months with the club. The veteran right-hander owns a 1-10 win-loss record and 5.87 earned-run average through his first 13 starts, allowing a league-worst 111 hits and 50 earned runs in 76⅔ innings.

Manager Mike Scioscia said that the team will re-evaluate Blanton's situation next week, once they see how everyone else pitches in the coming days. While Scioscia did not explicitly say it, this probably implies that Jerome Williams could become a permanent fixture in the rotation should his start against the Orioles go well enough on Wednesday.

With an off day Thursday, the Halos can pass over Blanton and still start the rest of the rotation on normal rest. C.J. Wilson, Tommy Hanson, and Jered Weaver will take the hill for the Angels during their three-game set in the Bronx.
