Corey Hart injury: Brewers 1B might be out until All-Star break

Milwaukee may have to survive with Yuniesky Betancourt and Juan Francisco at first a little longer than expected.

Jeff Hanisch-USA TODAY Sports

The Milwaukee Brewers may have to continue using spare parts at the cold corner just a little bit longer. General manager Doug Melvin announced in a radio interview this morning that first baseman Corey Hart might not return to the team until after the All-Star break, relays Tom Haudricourt of the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel.

More Brewers: Another Step Back...

Hart, 31, was expected to sit out the first two months of the season because of a January knee surgery that repaired torn cartilage and addressed a partial microfracture in his right knee joint. Hart originally thought that he would be ready to go by the end of May, but when his May 30 activation date came he was still a long way from being game-ready.

Hart has yet to run the bases at full speed because of lingering issues with his quad muscles, and will not start a rehab assignment until he is able to do so.

Milwaukee's star first baseman did tell Adam McCalvy of MLB.com a few days ago that he thought he'd be good to go before the All-Star break, so there is still a chance he'll take the field for the Brew Crew in the first half of July. Hart's return to first can't come soon enough for the Brewers, who have used Yuniesky Betancourt, Alex Gonzalez, and a handful of others at the position to compile an MLB-worst collective batting line of .183/.222/.285 through 65 games.
