It didn't take long for the Colorado Rockies to come to terms with their top pick in the 2013 MLB Draft. The club agreed to terms with Oklahoma right-hander Jonathan Gray on Wednesday, signing the college star to a $4.8 million deal, reports Jim Callis of Baseball America.

The $4.8 million deal is slightly below the $5.6 million slot value for the No. 3 pick, which puts the Rockies in good position to come to terms with the rest of their draftees over the next few weeks.

Is the catcher's promotion an act of desperation or something else? The 6'4, 239-pound right-hander is the Rockies' second-highest draft pick in franchise history behind fellow right-hander Greg Reynolds, the No. 2 pick in the 2006 Draft. The club has hopes that Gray will go much more success than Reynolds, who has spent most of his career struggling his way through the minor-league system.
Gray, 21, was 10-2 with a 1.59 ERA and 138 strikeouts to just 22 walks in 119 innings for the Oklahoma Sooners this season. He will begin his professional career with the Grand Junction Rockies, the club’s rookie ball affiliate, per Troy Renck of the Denver Post, but is unlikely to stay there long.
