With Jose Iglesias still on the big-league roster, there is an open shortstop spot for Bogaerts at Pawtucket, a spot which he'll likely take over Thursday night if the game is not rained out.
Tim Tebow... Baseball Player?
Would Skip Bayless still care about Tim Tebow if he didn't play football? We'll never know, but we could have. The 20-year-old shortstop made mincemeat of Double-A pitching in April and May, despite being the youngest position player in the league. The Baseball America No. 8 prospect hit a stellar .311/.407/.502 with six home runs and six triples in 56 games for the Portland Sea Dogs, all but forcing Boston to promote him to the next level.
With his promotion to the International League, Bogaerts is not only the youngest player in the league, but he’s also the youngest position player to take the field for Pawtucket in franchise history, per Pete Abraham of the Boston Globe.
The Red Sox signed veteran shortstop Stephen Drew to a one-year, $9.5 million contract over the winter in the hopes that Bogaerts would be ready to take over the role -- or at least share it with Iglesias -- by the start of the 2014 season. If he continues his stellar play at Triple-A, however, the Red Sox may get their shortstop of the future sooner than they expected.
