Yankees backstop Chris Stewart is a good defensive catcher, but he made a significant mistake in Thursday's game against the Athletics. Seth Smith hit a double to right field, which Ichiro Suzuki played off the bounce, and then threw to the infield. The throw was cut off and and got to Stewart in time to beat the A's John Jaso to the plate, but Stewart forgot one major thing: he tagged Jaso with his glove, which did not have the ball.
Yankees catcher Chris Stewart tags runner, but not with the ball
When tagging baserunners, it helps to actually use the hand the baseball is in.

Stewart then shows off the ball in his glove-less hand, only sealing his fate as that guy who forgot to tag the runner with the hand the baseball is in. If you look closely, you can see he actually did hit Jaso with the glove before he was able to tag home -- had he kept the baseball in his glove, Jaso would have been out.
It’s even more clear from this angle, which also includes C.B. Bucknor’s emphatic safe call:
So close, Chris Stewart. So very close.
