Ump punches batter out on two strikes

C.B. Bucknor he had seen enough of Seth Smith at the plate after two strikes.

USA TODAY Sports

The New York Yankees and Oakland Athletics played an 18-inning game last night, which Oakland finally won 3-2. It took 5:35 to complete the game, and both teams had great opportunities earlier in the game to come away with the victory. Athletics infielder Brandon Moss was thrown out at home plate in the bottom of the 15th inning, while the Yankees stranded 11 runners in extra innings alone.

Umpire C.B. Bucknor, perhaps blessed with the ability of foresight, attempted to speed the game along, ringing up Athletics outfielder Seth Smith on strike two in the bottom of the 11th.

Bucknor quickly realized his error, but not before receiving some confused looks from Smith and Yankees catcher Chris Stewart. The umpire then raised to fingers to prove he knew the number of strikes. Bucknor chuckled after his error, making his mistake appear more comical than malicious.
