Robinson Cano upset by accusation of sign stealing

The Yankees second baseman exchanged words with Oakland catcher Derek Norris in the 13th inning Thursday.

USA TODAY Sports

New York Yankees second baseman Robinson Cano did not like the accusation from Oakland Athletics catcher Derek Norris that he was stealing signs from second base, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com is reporting.

The incident took place in the 13th inning of Thursday's 18-inning marathon, eventually won by Oakland 3-2. Cano led off the top of the 13th inning with a double against relief pitcher Hideki Okajima. Norris then apparently accused Cano of relaying signs from second base to Yankees hitters.

The two players briefly jawed once the inning ended. Cano discussed their conversation with Hoch, stating:

“It was the catcher talking. He said that I was giving signs. When he first said something, he came to the mound and had his mask on. And then after that, they struck out Vernon [Wells] and I said, ‘Throw the ball over the plate,’ you know what I mean?”

Cano had an impressive day offensively, finishing 3-for-6 with two doubles and a home run, but the rest of the Yankees went 7-for-54. If the second baseman was relaying signs to his teammates, it didn’t seem to help them much at the plate.
