Jonathan Broxton injury: Reds pitcher placed on DL; Pedro Villarreal recalled

Broxton is suffering from an elbow injury and has been placed on the disabled list retroactive to Friday.

The Cincinnati Reds placed right-handed pitcher Jonathan Broxton on the disabled list Saturday and called up RHP Pedro Villarreal from Triple-A Louisville to take the reliever's roster spot, according to the team's official Twitter page.

Broxton is suffering from a flexor mass strain in his right elbow. The pitcher has been dealing with a soreness in his elbow recently, but was called in to pitch in extra innings during Thursday night's game against the Cubs. He had the elbow examined in Cincinnati afterward, however, where it was evidently deemed bad enough to warrant a DL stint.

The 28-year-old Broxton was pitching very well this season, though one six-run appearance in mid-April pushed his ERA up to 4.33. He signed a three-year, $21 million contract with the Reds in the offseason after the team acquired him in trade with the Kansas City Royals at the 2012 trade deadline.

Villarreal, 25, has pitched in one major league game each of the last two seasons with Cincinnati. He has worked as a starter for most of his minor league career, staying in Louisville’s rotation all of this season to accumulate 12 starts and a 5.12 ERA.
