Mark Appel, Astros reportedly reach deal worth more than $6 million; Houston denies report

Mark Appel and the Astros have agreed to terms ... or have they?

Melina Vastola-US PRESSWIRE

The Houston Astros and No. 1 overall draft pick Mark Appel have agreed to a deal worth more than $6 million, according to CBS Sports' Jon Heyman. The Astros have denied the report, per Brian T. Smith of the Houston Chronicle.

If the deal is done, Appel will nearly double what the Pittsburgh Pirates offered after selecting the right-handed pitcher from Stanford with the No. 8 overall pick a year ago. The Pirates offered Appel $3.3 million, which he turned down in favor of another year with the Cardinal.

Appel finished the 2013 season with a 10-4 record and a 2.12 ERA. He struck out 130 batters and walked 23 in 106 ⅓ innings while allowing 80 hits.

Appel stated last week that he would not sign a deal until he graduates from the university, according to Smith. Stanford’s commencement ceremony is set for Sunday.
