The Milwaukee Brewers have shut down star outfielder Ryan Braun from baseball activities for a week, reports the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel.

The Brewers placed Braun, 29, on the disabled list Friday due to a thumb/hand injury. Braun had been playing through the injury, but it eventually grew to be too much of a hindrance. In particular, his power numbers have been sapped as Braun’s slugging percentage is down 56 points from his career average.

The Brewers are hoping that a DL stint and some rest will allow his hand to heal so Braun can be closer to full health for the rest of the season.

Braun’s injury has been described as a slow-healing bruise, according to Yahoo! Sports Big League Stew. Were the team in contention, Braun could likely return before the end of June. However, Milwaukee is currently last in the NL Central with a 28-39 record and may give Braun extra rest to insure his health.

Logan Schafer has been playing in left field for the Brewers while Braun is out. The rookie has been hitting very well, with a .933 OPS in five starts the past week.
