Alex Cobb injury: Rays P to be released from hospital Sunday, placed on 7-day DL

Cobb was struck in the head by a line drive Saturday night, but appears to have escaped with just a mild concussion.

Tampa Bay Rays pitcher Alex Cobb will be released from the hospital Sunday, one day after being struck in the head by a line drive. The Rays placed Cobb on the 7-day DL for a mild concussion, according to Joe Smith of the Tampa Bay Times.

Cobb was removed on a stretcher from Saturday's game after a line drive off the bat of Eric Hosmer hit him in the side of the head. Cobb collapsed clutching his head, but reportedly never lost consciousness and was taken to a nearby hospital.

The Rays do not yet have a timetable for Cobb’s return. The fact that his concussion is classified as mild is good news, though concussions are notoriously difficult to judge. Some clear up after a day or two while others carry effects after several months. It will likely be a few days before there is an idea of how long the right hander could be out.

Cobb, 25, was in the midst of an excellent season, compiling a 3.01 ERA and 1.159 WHIP over 13 starts in 2013.

The Rays called up Josh Lueke to take Cobb's roster spot. Lueke, 28, was with the big league squad for much of May, pitching in nine games out of the bullpen with a 3.72 ERA. In 19 relief appearances for Triple-A Durham, Lueke has allowed just two earned runs.
