Clayton Kershaw contract: Dodgers P blames team over leaked talks

Clayton Kershaw is not happy that news leaked about his contract talks with the Dodgers.

Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Clayton Kershaw spoke to reporters Sunday about his unhappiness with how recent contract talks with the franchise were leaked to the media, Dylan Hernandez of the L.A. Times reports.

On Saturday, Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports reported that Kershaw and the Dodgers were working on an extension worth over $200 million, which would dwarf the massive deals handed out to Justin Verlander and Felix Hernandez. Kershaw was hoping to keep the news under wraps, but now the cat's out of the bag and he thinks the Dodgers are to blame.

From the L.A. Times:

“I think the reason we’ve been able to continue discussions for this long is that it’s not been talked about,” Kershaw said. “And now that I’m having to talk about it, it’s a distraction because people are talking about it. I guess you’ll have to talk to the Dodgers as to why it came out now. I don’t love the fact that I have to talk about it.”

“We kind of had an agreement that we weren’t going to talk about it,” Kershaw said. “It didn’t come from our side.”

Kershaw wouldn’t comment on the Rosenthal report, admitting he’s unsure how this leak might affect negotiations. General manager Ned Colleti also declined comment.

Kershaw is set to earn $11 million in 2013. He has one more year of arbitration left before hitting free agency after the 2014 season. The 25-year-old has a 1.84 ERA and 104 strikeouts in 107⅓ innings this season.
