Earl Webb holds the major-league record for doubles with 67 in one year. Webb set the record in 1931, and no player has hit 60 doubles in a season since 1936. Todd Helton hit 59 doubles for the Colorado Rockies in 2000, the highest single-season doubles total since the 1930s.
Machado’s success as a hitter this season has been particularly impressive, as the Orioles third baseman is only 20 years old. Machado has received comparisons to current New York Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez, who hit 54 doubles as a 20-year-old in 1996.
The third baseman continues to force himself into the discussion about who the best young position player in baseball is, along with Mike Trout and Bryce Harper. If he continues to chase the doubles record for the rest of the season, he might warrant the same attention as the other two.
