The Tampa Bay Rays will call up top hitting prospect Wil Myers to the team on Tuesday, the team announced on Sunday. The team will option Ryan Roberts to Triple-A Durham in a corresponding move, Joe Smith of the Tampa Bay Times is reporting.

The Rays acquired Myers this offseason, along with Jake Odorizzi, Patrick Leonard and Mike Montgomery in a trade with the Kansas City Royals. Tampa Bay sent starting pitchers James Shields and Wade Davis to Kansas City.

John Sickels of Minor League Ball ranked Myers as the Rays’ No. 1 prospect, and the No. 7 overall prospect in baseball, writing about the outfielder:
I love the power and overall offensive package, main concern is strikeouts which could inhibit batting average, at least in the short run. Tampa seems like it will be a better fit for him than Kansas City was going to be.
The 22-year-old has spent the first few months of the season in Triple-A, and hit .283/.354/.514 in 288 plate appearances. Myers smacked 14 home runs, but did strike out 71 times.
Tampa Bay may have called Myers to the majors earlier in the season, but likely wanted to avoid the “Super Two” deadline, which would have made Myers eligible for arbitration a year earlier. Michael Valancius of DRays Bay explained the Rays’ decision-making on Myers earlier this season.
