New York Mets will not trade Bobby Parnell, per report

The front office views the closer as a key piece for the team next season.

USA TODAY Sports

The New York Mets have no plans to trade closer Bobby Parnell this season, Andy Martino of the New York Daily News is reporting.

Parnell is considered one of the most attractive trade chips on a struggling Mets team. The closer has posted a 2.83 ERA with 26 strikeouts in 28 2/3 innings, successfully saving nine games in 12 chances.

Parnell is also still under team control, making him a cheaper option to shore up a bullpen than Philadelphia Phillies closer Jonathan Papelbon. The Detroit Tigers and the Cincinnati Reds are two contenders with thin bullpens that would likely be interested in Parnell if the closer is available.

Mets general manager Sandy Alderson, however, views Parnell as a key piece for next season, and believes the team is closer to contention than their 25-39 record indicates. Alderson is more likely to move prospects than trade for them, Martino notes, and is looking specifically for major-league outfielders under control beyond the 2013 season.
