Alfonso Soriano calls Carlos Marmol’s performance “unacceptable”

The Cubs outfielder was upset following Marmol’s blown save against the Mets on Sunday.

USA TODAY Sports

Chicago Cubs outfielder Alfonso Soriano was upset following the team's loss to the New York Mets on Sunday, and talked with Paul Sullivan of the Chicago Tribune about the loss and pitcher Carlos Marmol.

Chicago entered the bottom of the ninth inning with a 3-0 lead over New York, but Marmol surrendered a solo home run to Marlon Byrd and a walk-off three-run home run to Kirk Nieuwenhuis. Marmol has more blown saves than successful saves this season, and has a 6.08 ERA in 30 appearances.

Soriano described the loss as “unacceptable,” telling Sullivan:

”When we have a 99 (percent) chance to win the game, it’s very tough the last inning. Three outs left and we lost the game. It’s unacceptable, especially when we’re winning 3-0 and (Matt) Garza’s pitching a very good game.

The outfielder says the team still supports Marmol, but sounded unsure if the right-hander could succeed in the closer role again.

“I don’t know. It depends on him. He used to be good. I think he’s good, but he’s lost a little bit of his confidence, and this game is all about confidence. ... I hope he gets it back and becomes the Marmol I know.”

Marmol could fire back a similar retort to Soriano, Aaron Gleeman of Hardball Talk points out. Soriano is hitting .257/.290/.404 in 259 plate appearances this season.
