Everth Cabrera injury: Padres SS injures hamstring

Cabrera will undergo tests on Monday to determine the seriousness of the injury.

USA TODAY Sports

San Diego Padres shortstop Everth Cabrera injured his left hamstring on Sunday in the team's 4-1 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks, Scott Briar of MLB.com is reporting.

Cabrera suffered the injury sliding into second during a stolen base attempt in the eighth inning. Chase Headley fouled the pitch off, negating the attempt. The shortstop exited the game in the ninth inning, replaced by Pedro Ciriaco.

The seriousness of the injury is not known; Cabrera is expected to return to San Diego on Monday and undergo formal tests. Padres manager Bud Black discussed the injury with Briar, stating:

“We don’t know if it’s a pull, a strain or a pretty severe cramp. He felt a little something, but he continued through the inning. When he got back to the dugout, he was in a little bit of pain. There’s some soreness there, and we’ll evaluate it further.”

Cabrera has played well to start the season, hitting .305/.382/.418 in 317 plate appearances with a league-leading 31 stolen bases in 37 attempts.

Any long-term loss of Cabrera would be devasting for the Padres, who have fought their way back into contention after a slow start. San Diego has won six games in a row, and sits two games behind the Diamondbacks for first place in the NL West.
