Jose Reyes, Brandon Morrow begin rehab assignments

The Blue Jays are one step closer to getting two key players back following a Monday night minor league appearance.

John Rieger-USA TODAY Sports

Jose Reyes and Brandon Morrow both began their rehab assignments Monday night for the Toronto Blue Jays' Class A affiliate in Dunedin, Fla. A timetable hasn't been reported quite yet, but the team's manager announced after the game that both will continue their rehab at higher levels before returning to the big show.

Reyes went 2-for-3 while being in the lineup for five innings before being pulled whereas Morrow pitched the first two innings of the game, allowing three runs. The team expects Morrow to need a few more rehab starts before being ready to return while Reyes’ return is expected in the next ten days.

Reyes has been out of action since April 12 when he severely sprained his ankle sliding into second base. The injury-plagued shortstop was expected to provide Toronto with a significant amount of value this season, but so far his injury has been a key factor to Toronto’s under-performance.

Morrow, on the other hand, hit the disabled list with forearm tightness at the beginning of June. The team wants to ensure that the pitcher is fully healthy before moving him back to the majors.

The Blue Jays sit at 33-36 and in last place in the American League East division, but are playing better as of late. With the potential return of Morrow and Reyes,Toronto could make a run at the playoffs.
