Around the Bases: Monday’s scores and highlights

All the scores and highlights from Monday’s slate of games.

Scott Cunningham

Rangers 8, Athletics 7: Despite a lackluster performance from Nick Tepesch, the Rangers were able to win this one on the strength of three home runs. Ian Kinsler returned to the lineup, forcing one of the Rangers' two best middle infield defenders to DH.

Royals 2, Indians 1: Two late-inning runs and a solid performance by James Shields allowed the Royals to continue to play quietly solid baseball.

Phillies 5, Nationals 4: Domonic Brown got a hit that wasn't a home run, and it happened to be a walkoff single. Is #NationaLOLs a thing yet?

Blue Jays 2, Rockies 0: Josh Johnson was dominant for 7 1/3 innings as the Blue Jays continued to inch back toward contention.

Tigers 5, Orioles 1: Max Scherzer was dominant, and except for a Chris Davis home run, he was near-untouchable.

Reds 4, Pirates 1: The Reds scored all their runs in this one on home runs, and Mike Leake allowed one run over seven innings.

White Sox 4, Astros 2: Three RBIs from Dayan Viciedo squandered an otherwise good outing from Bud Norris, as the White Sox avoid a sweep to the Astros.

Marlins 3, Diamondbacks 2: Giancarlo Stanton did all the run-producing for the Marlins in this one, as he hit two home runs and drove in all three runs. Giancarlo 1, Diamondbacks 0.

Cardinals 5, Cubs 2: The Cardinals lineup continued to string hits together, and Shelby Miller and Co. continued the Cardinals' excellent pitching.

Angels 11, Mariners 3: This was a good old-fashioned stomping at the Big A. Jason Vargas picked up the win as the Halos scored 11 runs with only three extra-base hits: doubles from Howie Kendrick and Albert Pujols and the 10th home run of the year for Josh Hamilton.

Braves 2, Mets 1: Following a lengthy rain delay, Dillon Gee and Tim Hudson engaged in a pitchers' duel. The Mets looked likely to come out on top when Gee took it upon himself to provide his own run support, hitting an RBI single in the top of the seventh, but on his 100th pitch in the bottom of the ninth, Freddie Freeman hit a two-strike, two-run walk-off homer to end it.

Padres 5, Giants 3 (F/13): In Monday's only game to go to extra innings, a shaky Giants bullpen gave up a 3-2 lead in the seventh. Will Venable made a spectacular, game-saving catch in the bottom of the 12th and the Padres went ahead for good on an RBI infield single from Andrew Cashner in the top of the 13th.
