NCAA Baseball Tournament 2013 update: No. 3 seeds dominating rematches

Sunday is proving that Day 1 upsets were not a fluke.

Miami, Ole Miss and Clemson are all among the notable No. 2 seeds that have been eliminated from the NCAA College Baseball Championships early Sunday. The No. 3 seeds have come out with a vengeance, starting out 5-1 in their Day 1 rematches of No. 2 seeds.

Second-seeded Alabama looked to be safe in its rematch with Troy as it headed into the top of the ninth inning with an 8-5 lead. The Trojans had other plans, however, as they mounted a four-run rally to complete a dramatic come-from-behind victory and send the Crimson Tide home in heart-breaking fashion. With the score tied at eight and the bases loaded with one out, Alabama walked home the winning run to give Troy the 9-8 win.

The season is also over for Clemson and Ole Miss. Both were legitimate threats to make it to the super regional round, but both are gone without even having the chance to face the No. 1 seeds in their respective regionals. The Rebels’ offense looked bewildered in a 4-1 loss to William & Mary as Tribe starting pitcher Brett Koehler worked a 98-pitch complete game against them. Clemson didn’t look much better at the dish, scoring only once in its second loss to Liberty in three days.

Tournament sweetheart Towson, who played part of the season under threat of having their program cancelled, didn’t get the fairy tale ending it wanted, surrendering a game-deciding run in the ninth inning to Florida Atlantic.

The winners of Sunday’s early games advance to play in the regional finals later in the day, where they’ll have to knock off the awaiting undefeated team twice in order to move on. The schedule for these games can be found here.
