Andrew Bailey out as Red Sox closer

The Red Sox will make a change at the closer spot.

Anthony Gruppuso-US PRESSWIRE

Andrew Bailey's time as the Red Sox's closer could be over, reports Evan Drellich of MassLive.com.

Bailey blew a save Thursday night in Detroit, failing to record an out in the Red Sox's 4-3 loss to Detroit. He served up a walk-off two-run home run to Jhonny Peralta.

The Red Sox did not name a replacement, but they said that they would review the options that they had on the team.

After trading Josh Reddick among others to acquire Bailey, the Red Sox have certainly not gotten a good return on their trade package. Bailey missed most of last season with an injury, and has been ineffective in 2013.

Bailey will look to rediscover the effectiveness of his fastball in a different role from the closer spot, reported Alex Speier of WEEI.

Bailey, 29, has eight saves and an ERA of 3.22 in 2013. He was the 2009 American League Rookie of the Year for the Oakland Athletics, but has not been the same since his age-26 season in 2010.
