Orioles trade rumors: Baltimore ‘aggressively’ pursuing starting pitching

The Orioles want to add a starter without surrendering one of their promising young arms.

Duane Burleson

The Baltimore Orioles are "aggressively" pursuing starting pitching to help their rotation, Brittany Ghiroli of MLB.com is reporting.

Baltimore enters its game Friday against the Toronto Blue Jays with a 42-31 record, sitting one game behind the Boston Red Sox for first place in the AL East. The team's offense has fueled its success; the Orioles have scored the third-most runs in baseball. Their starter pitchers, however, own the fourth-highest ERA among starters in baseball.

Ghiroli mentions five possible targets for the Orioles: Ricky Nolasco of the Miami Marlins; Bud Norris of the Houston Astros; Jason Vargas of the Los Angeles Angels; Mike Pelfrey of the Minnesota Twins; and Joe Saunders of the Seattle Mariners. The Orioles acquired Saunders last season in late August, and the southpaw started in the team's victory over the Texas Rangers in the American League Wild Card Game.

Baltimore wants to add a pitcher to eat innings and keep the bullpen fresh, but does not appear interested in chasing a top-flight pitcher. The Orioles do not want to part with Kevin Gausman and Dylan Bundy, Ghiroli notes, leaving the team with few trade chips.
