White Sox trade rumors: Jake Peavy, Jesse Crain, Alex Rios on the block?

The White Sox may trade a number of players before the deadline if they cannot climb back into contention.

The Chicago White Sox have started fielding calls on a number of players, and may move quite a few before the trade deadline, Jon Heyman of CBS Sports is reporting.

White Sox general manager Rick Hahn talked with Heyman about the trade market, stating:

“We are getting phone calls, and they will probably become a little bit more voluminous if we don’t turn it around pretty quickly.”

Chicago does have a number of players that could help a contender during the playoff stretch. Jake Peavy will likely be an attractive starting pitching option in a shallow market. The starter is expected to miss the next four weeks with a broken rib, but he should draw a good return if he can come back healthy.

Alex Rios and Alexei Ramirez are two position players that might be moved as well. Rios is considered the more attractive option, as the outfielder is hitting .280/.339/.465 in 296 plate appearances this season. Ramirez has struggled at the plate this year, hitting .277/.306/.343. Rios is under contract until 2014, while Ramirez is signed through 2015.

Jesse Crain will also draw a lot of interest; the reliever owns a 0.55 ERA with 43 strikeouts in 34 appearances this season. A team like the Detroit Tigers or Boston Red Sox could plug Crain into the closer role, but the right-hander does not have the "proven closer" label. Matt Thornton and Matt Lindstrom may also be moved to a team in need of bullpen help.
